SINOPSE

Em abril de 1506, durante as celebrações da Páscoa, cerca de dois mil cristãos-novos foram mortos num pogrom em Lisboa e os seus corpos queimados no Rossio. Reinava então D. Manuel, o Venturoso, e os frades incitavam o povo à matança, acusando os cristãos-novos de serem a causa da fome e da peste que flagelavam a cidade. 
Berequias, sobrinho e discípulo de Abraão Zarco - iluminador e membro respeitado da célebre escola cabalística de Lisboa -, vai encontrar o tio e uma jovem desconhecida mortos na cave que servia de templo secreto desde que a sinagoga fora encerrada pelos cristãos-velhos. Um valioso manuscrito iluminado também desapareceu do seu esconderijo. Estarão os dois incidentes relacionados? Terá sido um cristão ou um judeu, como os indícios fazem crer, a assassinar o tio? Quem será a rapariga morta?

Prémio Man Booker Prize 2018

A escritora irlandesa Anna Burns foi a vencedora da 50.ª edição do prémio Man Booker Prize com o seu livro Milkman — trata-se do primeiro autor da Irlanda do Norte a vencer o galardão, o mais prestigiado prémio britânico de literatura. A obra de Burns, a 17.ª mulher a vencer o prémio desde a sua criação em 1969, centra-se na história de uma mulher de 18 anos que é assediada por um homem poderoso. 

Dia Mundial dos Animais

O Dia Mundial dos Animais é comemorado todos os anos a 4 de outubro, desde 1931. 

A comemoração da data teve origem em Florença, durante um congresso de ecologistas, e foi escolhida em honra da festa de São Francisco de Assis, um amante da natureza e o padroeiro dos animais e do meio ambiente.

A liberdade, muitas vezes, acaba por sobreviver graças a espaços tão apertados quanto o lava-loiças de um fotógrafo. Esta é a história, baseada num episódio real (passado com os avós do autor), de um pintor eslovaco que nasceu no final do século XIX, no império austro- húngaro, que emigrou para os EUA e voltou a Bratislava e que, por causa do nazismo, teve de fugir para debaixo de um lava-loiças.

Dia Europeu das Línguas

Por toda a Europa, 800 milhões de europeus dos 47 estados-membros do Conselho da Europa são encorajados a aprender mais línguas, em qualquer idade, dentro e fora da escola. O Conselho da Europa promove o plurilinguismo em todo o continente, com base na convicção de que a diversidade linguística é uma via para alcançar uma maior compreensão intercultural e um elemento-chave da riqueza do património cultural da Europa.

Por iniciativa do Conselho da Europa, sedeado em Estrasburgo, o Dia Europeu das Línguas tem vindo a ser celebrado, todos os anos desde 2001, no dia 26 de setembro.

O Livro do Mês #1

SINOPSE

Com doze anos, o Constantino ainda não deitou corpo, mas lá esperteza não lhe falta.

O pior é a escola: gosta mais de andar aos peixes e aos pássaros. E acabou por apanhar uma raposa sem sequer ir à caça. Enquanto guarda as vacas, o Constantino sonha é em ser serralheiro de navios e fazer um barco que o leve até Lisboa.

Amanhã mesmo deita mãos à obra.

As a teenager, I define myself as someone with a lot of interests and hobbies and with some worries too, of course, but, principally, as a happy teenager.

Everyone has worries, and I’m not an exception. I really worry about getting good marks in my tests, whether I will pass the exam or whether I’m going to miss the bus.

The things that I like the most are listening to music, reading, riding my bike and going out with my family and friends.

My biggest dream, or at least one of them, is to visit a lot of countries around the world when I get older, especially in Asia, because I love Asian culture.

Professionally, even though I still don’t know what I want to do for a living, I really want to go to university and get a good job.

VI Olimpíadas da Língua Portuguesa

Decorreu hoje, às 10.00 horas, a fase nacional das VI Olimpíadas da Língua Portuguesa, na escola Aurélia de Sousa, no Porto.

A ESEQ fez-se representar por um grupo de sete alunas, do 11º e do 12º anos de escolaridade. Os resultados desta fase serão conhecidos em julho e desejamos toda a sorte às nossas meninas!

The Impact of Technology on Teens

Technology is a big part of our lives nowadays, whether we like it or not, and without it, most of us would be clueless on what to do.

Teens are definitely avid users of it, being the cellphone one of the most important things for them. It’s made the world so much smaller, and without any effort, we can talk to anyone. It helps us to make friends. It also helps with school, like doing projects, and homework on your phone or computer.

On the other hand, we can also lose friends if we are too attached to our phones or computers. If we prefer to stay at home playing games, instead of going out with friends, we might loose them. That’s when people have an addiction, which can be very bad for their lives.

In conclusion, I think technology is definitely very important, but there should be a line that shouldn’t be crossed, so that it doesn’t become a problem.

My Dream Job

My dream job is to be an actress, or an actor, as they now like to be called. I have had this thought ever since I started doing oral presentations at school. I really love being in front of the whole class and pretending to be someone else.

There are two types of actors: theatre actors and TV and movie actors. They don't differ a lot, but there are some particularities to both.

To be a theatre actor not only do you need to be very theatrical and dramatic, (and I've been told I'm both) but also very imaginative so that you can improvise on the spot if you ever forget your lines.

Now, to be a movie actor you must have basically the same qualities as a theatre actor, but you also need to be pretty (and I'm only saying this because I've never seen an actor with an “ugly cry-face”, somehow they always look gorgeous). And I suppose it would help if you had an acting degree, too (which I don't!).

I think that the best option for me would be the second one because I'm known to be very clumsy, and there are no “do overs” in theatre acting.

Will this dream ever come true? Who knows?! Maybe if I ever decide to get an acting degree and get out of my comfort zone, then there might be a possibility.

A Tiny Gesture, an Unforgettable Reward

I've always been the one to notice and value small things, whether it is a bit of sand different from the others, a little flower that rises from the grass a bit higher than the rest or, in this case, a gesture, which despite being small, was filled with kindness.

It all happened around five years ago, when I went on a trip to Poland with my brother and my parents.

We were having a nice time, exploring the streets of Warsaw, when I noticed an old lady sitting by the side of the road asking for money. We kept on walking, but as we were about to cross the road, I turned to my brother and asked:

“Did you see that old lady back there?”

“Yes,” he responded “I feel quite bad for her.”

“Me too,” I agreed.

My dad, who was listening to our conversation, still says to this day, that he felt really proud of us at that moment. He quickly stopped walking and said:

“Do you want to help that poor woman?”

Both my brother and I said yes and so my dad handed us both five zelots and we gave them to the lady.

What happened next filled my heart completely.

The old woman got up, hugged us and gave us a big open smile.

This moment is something that I'll never forget even if I live to be a hundred.

Philip Roth (1933 - 2018)

O escritor norte-americano Philip Roth morreu aos 85 anos, ontem à noite, em Nova Iorque. Deixa obras que publicou ao longo de quase seis décadas, reconhecidas pelo público e pela crítica literária, muitas delas retratando o anti-semitismo e a cultura na América, a morte, a luxúria. 

Com mais de três dezenas de obras publicadas, Philip Roth é o autor de livros como A Mancha Humana, O Complexo de Portnoy ou O Escritor Fantasma. Foi com a obra Pastoral Americana que venceu o prémio Pulitzer de ficção em 1998. Apesar de ser anualmente apontado com um dos favoritos ao Nobel da Literatura, nunca chegou a receber essa distinção.

Júlio Pomar (1926 - 2018)

Pintor e escultor, nascido em Lisboa em 1926, Júlio Pomar é considerado um dos criadores de referência da arte moderna e contemporânea portuguesa. O artista deixa uma obra multifacetada que percorre mais de sete décadas, influenciada pela literatura, a resistência política, o erotismo e algumas viagens, como a Amazónia, no Brasil. A obra foi dedicada sobretudo à pintura e ao desenho, mas realizou igualmente trabalhos de gravura, escultura e assemblage, ilustração, cerâmica e vidro, tapeçaria, cenografia para teatro e decoração mural em azulejo.

The cartoon “Rat Race” makes a comical and sarcastic approach to today’s reality behind consumerism.

In fact, as we can see in this “Rat Race”, the rats are running through corridors with the desire to achieve their life goal. This desire is constantly being increased by the posters and propaganda on the walls. However, after every new corner, all they find is more and more path to be walked.

This story is a metaphor of today’s consumer society. Nowadays, people are surrounded by advertising and are eventually overcome by it. So to satisfy their desire to have the latest and most modern things, they just buy everything, whether it is necessary or not. This has become such a prominent and notable aspect of our society to the extreme point of being considered a disease.

These people buy everything new, influenced by marketing, with the hope of feeling fulfilled, but what they eventually end up with is buyer’s remorse.

In conclusion, I think that, unlike the rats in the cartoon, people should stop paying attention to what is around them, and start focusing on what really matters in their life.

Is passion the key to success in the current job market?

I think that, when it comes to success in the work industry, passion is an incredibly important aspect.

When you love your job, you easily become more invested in it, you become more motivated and even excited to go to work. If you work in something that doesn’t appeal to you, you will find yourself struggling to come up with ideas, you will feel forced to be working, you will become more stressed and you won’t really be happy. That is why it is important to find out what you really want to do in the world of work. As Steve Jobs once said, “if you haven’t found it yet, keep looking; don’t settle”. You shouldn’t stop looking for the perfect job for you because, when you do find it, you will feel very relieved and you will become less stressed and much happier.

To conclude, if you really want to be successful in the future world of work, you should follow Steve Jobs’ advice and make sure you work your hardest in a job you truly enjoy and wouldn’t mind doing for the rest of your life. It will keep you motivated and it will make ideas flow in your head.

SINOPSE

Um tempo múltiplo. Labiríntico. As histórias das sociedades humanas. Ricardo Reis chega a Lisboa em finais de dezembro de 1935. Fica até setembro de 1936. Uma personagem vinda de uma outra ficção, a da heteronímia de Fernando Pessoa. E um movimento inverso, logo a começar: «Aqui onde o mar se acaba e a terra principia»; o virar ao contrário o verso de Camões: «Onde a terra acaba e o mar começa.» Em Camões, o movimento é da terra para o mar; no livro de Saramago temos Ricardo Reis a regressar a Portugal por mar. É substituído o movimento épico da partida. Mais uma vez, a história na escrita de Saramago. E as relações entre a vida e a morte. Ricardo Reis chega a Lisboa em finais de dezembro e Fernando Pessoa morreu a 30 de novembro. Ricardo Reis visita-o ao cemitério. Um tempo complexo. O fascismo consolida-se em Portugal.

My favourite TV programme

My favourite TV programme is called ‘Skam’ and it is a Norwegian series. I watch it online because there is no channel broadcasting it now. Although I have subtitles, it still is a little hard to understand the series as they speak Norwegian.

‘Skam’ is about a group of teenagers and their lives while they are in high school. They all have different beliefs, perspectives and religions, which makes this series even more interesting! This series has four seasons and each of them focuses on different characters and their problems. The first tells you about Eva and her problems with her boyfriend and her old friends from middle school. The second one is about Noora and how she stands up for her causes along with the most idiotic boy from school. The third one is about Isaak and Even, and in it Isaak opens up about his sexuality; he starts dating Even and fighting his problems. I am still watching the fourth season – it is about Sana, a Muslim girl, who loves a non-Muslim boy and has to prepare everything for the ‘Russ bus’, a Norwegian student tradition.

I love this series because of the several emotions that we get to feel with the characters and their actions. Besides, we get to know a new language and new cultural aspects like the ‘Russ bus’, which is the main point of the series.

You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military? You’re going to need a good education for every single one of those careers.  You can’t  drop out of school and just drop into a good job. You’ve got to work  for it and train for it and learn for it.

Do you believe in the benefits of engaging in different activities/experiences or do you think that education should always be a young person’s priority?

Education is always important for younger people but it shouldn’t be the number one priority. School can only teach you a bit about life, so you have to use other resources to obtain experience and knowledge to overcome life obstacles. The more you know and the more information you learn inside and outside school, the better. As Obama says in the quote, “you’ve got to work for it and train for it and learn for it”.

Of course no one can learn everything in life, but if you want to pursue something more specific, you should try and learn the most about it. You can travel, read books about it, workshadow or even do an internship. The latter – workshadowing and doing an internship - will give you the most knowledge if you already know what you want. When you apply for another job, you can write on your resume about that internship or whatever you did to gain skills, and they will probably value you more for that, so you will have more chances of being chosen.

To conclude, my advice to you is, while you are studying, try to do different things to gain experience in life, and even after you start working, keep on learning, about your area and still more!

Escuro, de Ana Luísa Amaral, é um extraordinário livro onde se reflete sobre a literatura e sobre as inquietações do nosso tempo e do nosso quotidiano, e onde surge, com grande fulgor, um diálogo polifónico com Fernando Pessoa e o seu drama em gente. Porque «O lume que as sustenta, / a estas vozes, / é mais de dentro, e eu não o sei dizer».

A vital society preserves difference - conformism kills society. (Thomas Merton)

Nowadays, we live in a multicultural society where people with different races, cultures and beliefs all work together to build a better world. Thanks to globalisation, we are used to sharing experiences with other people and that is a perfect way to evolve.

However, there are many people who still think that their own culture is superior and, because of it, usually discriminate against other citizens. As Norman Rockwell shows, I believe that you shouldn't act that way because you should do to other people what you would want them to do to you. In addition, I agree with Errol Anthony when he states that there is something wrong with xenophobic people since they cannot get along with other groups of people and, thus, miss opportunities to learn new things.

Finally, Thomas Merton says that a good and developed society is one that preserves difference and I couldn't agree more since we, as individuals, and our society will improve every day if we can reach out for other cultures.

To sum up, I believe that the only way we can become better citizens is to accept the multicultural world around us and learn with it.

No dia Mundial da Poesia, os poemas andaram de boca em boca, entraram e saíram das salas de aula,  invadiram todos os espaços escolares.

Os alunos leitores lembraram ainda que se festejava também a chegada da Primavera e o Dia da Árvore.

The importance of music and reading in teenagers' lives

Music and reading have really important roles in my life.

Music is something that can make us feel really good about ourselves and it's not just about the lyrics; the melody transmits to us a vibe that we can't explain. When I come home or even when I study, I listen to music and after a few minutes of pure mental liberty, I can feel really better.

Reading has a total different meaning. When I read, I can imagine myself in another world. Some say it's boring, but people who say that probably haven't seen the side of reading that I always have. Books are so much more than pieces of paper. Books are life-changers; they are teleporters to a new and magical dimension.

Music and books, in my opinion, can be an escape from our problems and, if we use them well, we definitely won't be wasting our time.

Is it possible for young people to change the world?

Nowadays young people´s hopes are about school grades, college access, dates and, most importantly, friends, of course.

In my opinion, it is possible for young people to change the world because everything is more developed and there are much more opportunities than in our parents’ time. I think that if we try hard and if we truly want to succeed, we can be much better than our parents.

Teens can change the world because they simplify everything and their imagination is huge. When you are an adult, everything is harder.

In conclusion, being a teen is difficult because we have the pressure of our parents to be better than them and to change the world. Even so, young people are the only ones that can think out of the box without worrying about it.

O Dia Internacional da Mulher é comemorado anualmente a 8 de março, e é a celebração das conquistas sociais, políticas e económicas das mulheres ao longo dos anos, tendo sido instituído pela Organização das Nações Unidas, em 1977, e adotado por diversos países.

Feliz Dia a todas as Mulheres!

Gabriel García Márquez

Gabriel García Márquez celebraria hoje 91 anos. 

O jornalista e Prémio Nobel da Literatura (1982), também conhecido por Gabo, nasceu em Aracataca, na Colômbia, em 1927, e é considerado um dos mais conceituados autores do século XX. A obra Cem Anos de Solidão, que se tornou no seu maior sucesso, tendo sido traduzida em mais de 35 línguas, foi inspirada na casa e na cidade onde o escritor cresceu com os avós.

García Márquez estudou Direito e Ciências Políticas, mas abandonou os estudos e dedicou-se ao jornalismo em 1948, no jornal El Universal. Foi um ativista político e repórter dos jornais El Heraldo e  El Espectador. Foi correspondente na Europa e em Nova Iorque, tendo-se mudado por fim para o México.

Gabriel García Márquez morreu em 2014, aos 87 anos, na sua casa no México. 

“Por tudo isto e muito mais, celebramos o 91.º aniversário de um ícone cultural cuja estrela continua a brilhar sobre os mundos literário e jornalístico da América Latina e dos outros”, escreve o Google, que lhe dedica um doodle colorido onde se pode observar o seu retrato e a cidade mágica de Macondo, que ganhou vida no clássico Cem Anos de Solidão. A ilustração foi feita por Matthew Cruickshank.
